A month ago, Helen told her father that she would be more than happy to help care for him when he was released from the hospital. This was shortly after the stroke that left him with limited use of the left side of his body and difficult communicating. She felt guilty that she hadn’t been there for him more after her mother passed and since she didn’t live that far from him, it made sense to take care of him.
However, within the first week she began to second guess herself and she began to wonder if it would have been better to just hire home care services. For Helen, she was ill equipped to provide all of the support that her father needed. Even though she was told by the doctors at the hospital about all of the things that he was going to need help with, she assumed that it was something that she could do.
The last thing on her mind at that point was letting a stranger tend to his personal care. Even though the thought of helping him in and out of the shower, or onto the toilet wasn’t something she wanted to think about, she did it because he needed help.
While she could get used to the work, it was taking a toll on her personal and professional life. She had to leave work early a couple of days a week and, considering that her schedule varied, she didn’t know from one week to the next whether she would be able to go to her father’s house during the morning or evening.
One day, while she was sitting alone at home talking to her best friend about the stress she was dealing with, Helen realized that this just wasn’t going to work out. “I think my father needs more help than I can give him,” she told her friend.
It was at that moment that she decided it was time to find a professional in-home care provider. Her father needed someone who could help him recover, a physical and speech therapist, and other specialists because she wasn’t going to be able to manage those things.
She talked it over with her father and he agreed that it would ‘probably be best’ to hire home care services. It was the right decision. If you believe that you can’t handle being a caregiver, whether you’ve started or only agreed to care for your elderly loved one, talk to the elderly individual about home care services. Professionals with experience are one of the best options for those in need living at home.
